Progress Rule Exception Mixed Terms

Bylaw: Article V, Section C, Item 9

โ€œTo participate a second season in a sport, all students must have accumulated at least 24 semester/36 quarter (or equivalent) institutional credit hours.

EXCEPTION: A freshman who initially becomes identified after the first term in the fall shall meet this requirement by having passed 12 semester or 20 quarter institutional credit hours. This exception shall apply to the second season of competition regulation only.โ€

Interpretation

The exception outlined in Article V, Section C, Item 9 is intended for students who initially identify after the fall term (e.g. winter term or spring term) and compete in their first season of competition during either the winter and/or spring term of attendance. Students utilizing either 12 semester or 20 quarter institutional credit hours can utilize these hours to be certified for the second season of competition, regardless of the number of terms the second season of competition encompasses.

Example

A student identifies at an NAIA institution in the spring 2017 semester term and competes immediately in the sport of swimming. Going into the fall 2017, the student transfers to a quarter school to compete in swimming and evokes the exception found under Article V, Section C, Item 9. Going into the winter 2018 quarter term, can the student continue to be certified under the exception?

Approved Ruling: ย Yes. The student will be able to be certified under the exception found under Article V, Section C, Item 9, as the student is still being certified for their second season of competition during the winter 2018 term.
