Class Rank 1-1

Bylaw: Article V, Section C, Item 2c

โ€œAn entering freshman student must meet two of the three entry-level requirements below. Students not meeting at least two of the three standards shall be denied athletics participation at a member institution for the first full year of attendance (two semesters, three quarters, or the equivalent) that such a student is identified with any institution(s). The three entry-level requirements are as follows:

โ€ฆ

C. Rank in the upper half of the studentโ€™s high school class, as it appears on the final high school transcript after the studentโ€™s date of graduation. The class rank must appear on the studentโ€™s transcript, leaving certificate or other academic document. If the studentโ€™s class rank does not appear on the above-mentioned documents, a letter from the studentโ€™s principal or headmaster, assistant or vice principal, guidance counselor or registrar, written on the schoolโ€™s letterhead and with the schoolโ€™s official seal, stating that the student meets the class rank requirement can be accepted.โ€

Interpretation

If an instance occurs where a student is the only student in the senior class at their respective high school, the National Eligibility Center will not accept a class rank of 1 out of 1. The NEC has determined that inherent in a class rank is the ability to rank students aginst one another. If a cohort is not available to rank the student, the student will not be able to use class rank as one of the options for initial eligibility.
