48-Hour General Education Requirement, Transfer Students

Bylaw: Article V, Section C, Item 9

โ€œTo participate the fourth season in a sport, all students must have accumulated at least 72 semester/108 quarter (or equivalent) institutional credit hours, at least 48 semester/72 quarter hours of which must be in general education and/or in the studentโ€™s major field of study.โ€

โ€œTransfer students shall use institutional credit hours as certified by the previous institution(s) to meet this requirement only for their first term of attendance at a member institution. Thereafter, only institutional credit recognized by the studentโ€™s current institution and submitted to the registrar for posting on the transcript shall apply.โ€

Interpretation

For a transfer student, the 48-hour general education requirement is evaluated based on the studentโ€™s major and general education curriculum for each institution previously attended. In cases where a student attends multiple institutions, all applicable general education requirements earned at each institution may be calculated for the 48-hour general education requirement.

In cases where the major is undeclared or unknown, the NAIA institution must refer to the general education curriculum of the studentโ€™s previous institution to determine the number of credits earned.

If the student changed his/her major at a single institution, the NAIA institution must evaluate the rule based on the most recent declared major.

If the student has declared two majors, the general education requirements for both majors may be combined to meet the 48-Hour general education requirement.

Application

A student transferring to an NAIA institution who has already participated in three seasons of competition must have accumulated at least 72 semester/108 quarter institutional credit hours prior to competing in a fourth season of completion. Of those 72/108 institutional credit hours, at least 48 semester/72 quarter hours must be in general education and/or in the studentโ€™s major field of study. This interpretation provides guidance of how to determine a transfer studentโ€™s 48-hour general education requirement when the student has multiple majors declared at the previous institutions that he or she has attended, or were considered undeclared while at a previous institution.
