Bylaw: Article I, Section N, Item 1b
“Institutions having an inter-term that occurs between two regular terms may use the inter-term in one of three different ways in determining eligibility for students. The options are as follows:
- The inter-term (if it falls between the two regular terms) is attached to the first term for eligibility purposes. This would, in effect, make the 4-1-4 calendar into a 5-4 calendar in determining eligibility.”
For a school that attaches its inter-term to the fall term, if a student receives a determination of eligibile from the NAIA Eligibility Center for the fall after the close of the school’s fall term but during the inter-term, the student can still be certified based on this fall determination. The student will not need to be reactivated for a spring determination.
The NAIA institution will have to go into the student’s ECP profile and unlock the student’s profile. The NAIA institution can make the appropriate entry and save the student’s profile. The NAIA institution will then submit an addendum to the fall certificate for the student to compete.
A student is identified with an NAIA institution during the fall term. He receives a decision of eligible from the Eligibility Center that is issued for the fall term, but the decision is not issued until after the NAIA fall term has concluded. The NAIA institution’s inter-term is attached to the fall term. Will the student have to wait until the conclusion of the inter-term in order to compete?
No, because the school has chosen to attach its inter-term to the fall term, for eligibility purposes it is looked at as though the fall term is still in progress, meaning the student may be certified during the inter-term to compete. Since the student was otherwise eligible and received an EC decision that was issued for the fall term, the student can be certified to compete immediately. The NAIA institution will have to submit an addendum to the fall certificate (even though the fall term has concluded) in order for the student to compete.
