Article I, Section N, Item 1a – ECP Certification of Inter-Terms – Stand Alone

Bylaw: Article I, Section N, Item 1a

“Institutions having an inter-term that occurs between two regular terms may use the inter-term in one of three different ways in determining eligibility for students. The options are as follows:

  1. The inter-term shall stand separate. Eligibility shall be determined at the end of the first term, again at the end of the interterm (if the inter-term falls between the terms), and again at the end of the spring term.

. . . ”

Interpretation

For inter-terms that stand alone, to determine eligibility an institution is required to certify eligibility after each term and after the inter-term for those students enrolled in the inter-term. The institution will only need to certify students a second time (after the inter-term) if the students earned institutional credit during the inter-term. If students did not enroll in inter-term, they do not need to be certified a second time prior to the spring academic term. Note that the school’s choice to characterize the inter-term as a stand-alone term does not require that all student-athletes enroll in inter-term classes, nor does it require that all students be recertified after the inter-term.

Application

Certifying through the ECP portal for stand-alone inter-term sessions:

After the conclusion of the first academic term (fall term), the NAIA institution will be required to certify all winter sports prior to the start of the inter-term. Through ECP, the data entry person will create the spring term in order to certify. After the conclusion of the inter-term, for the students who utilized the inter-term and received institutional credit, the data entry person will need to unlock each individual student and adjust their profile accordingly. Once this is completed, the data entry person will need to save the profile and submit an addendum to the original certificate that was completed prior to the inter-term.

Students that did not enroll in inter-term, but were included it the original spring certificate, will not need to be recertified prior to the spring academic term.

All other sports will be certified prior to spring if they intend to compete.
